Success of SPEIT Students in the American International Collegiate Mathematical Modeling Competition

06.06/2024 2365

Recently, the results of the 40th American International Collegiate Mathematical Modeling Competition (MCM) and the Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) were announced. This year, 51 students from our institute stood out among 28,912 teams from over 20 countries and regions worldwide, achieving remarkable results. Among them, the team of Fan Cunxin, Wang Haonan, and Zhang Ke won the Outstanding Award (O Prix)s and the SIAM Prix (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Prix). Shanghai Jiao Tong University secured three Outstanding Awards in this year's competition. Additionally, the institute had five students nominated for the Finalist Award, 18 students won the Meritorious Winner Award, and 16 students received the Honorable Mention Award.

The institute has introduced French engineering education, adhering to a solid and diverse training philosophy, emphasizing mathematics and physics teaching, laying a solid foundation for subsequent studies in emerging engineering fields, allowing students to achieve great success. The institute’s Youth League Committee, in collaboration with the Student Innovation and Research Center, organizes the "Qi Yan Forum" lecture series and competition coaching, creating a strong atmosphere of scientific innovation and encouraging students to engage in scientific research and innovation, achieving good results. In the past two years, the institute has won two Outstanding Awards (O Award) in the MCM/ICM, with a total of 95 individual Awards.

Award-Winning Insights

Fan Cunxin, 2022 Undergraduate (Outstanding Award Winner)

I am honored to receive the MCM Outstanding Award and the SIAM Award. First, I want to thank my teammates: our strategy during the preparation period was successfully executed. Each member played their role during the competition, and we discussed key issues together, working collaboratively to complete the final paper. I also want to thank the institute for its emphasis and strong support for mathematical modeling competitions, including but not limited to the special lectures in the Qi Yan Forum. During the preparation period, I gained a lot of inspiration and ideas for writing and modeling by reading numerous papers, which ultimately contributed to our final results. I particularly wish our institute greater success in future mathematical modeling competitions.

Zheng Ziyi, 2023 Undergraduate (Finalist Award Winner)

This MCM competition was a highly rewarding experience for me. Our team attended lectures and exchanged ideas before the competition and participated in the mock exam held by the school’s training camp, which prepared us well. I believe that the most important factor during the competition was the sufficient communication among team members. At the beginning of the competition, we discussed and researched together, defining our understanding of the problem and the main direction of our modeling, which saved us a lot of trouble later on. We also planned our time during the competition, ensuring the smooth progress of our tasks. These experiences came from participating in the mock exam before the competition. I am very grateful to the mentors and volunteers of the mathematical modeling training camp and the institute for their support and help. This competition will inspire us to work harder and pursue excellence!

Wan Tianxi, 2021 Undergraduate (Finalist Award Winner)

As a team of students from SPEIT, we are honored to participate in the MCM for the first time and win the Finalist Award. In this competition, we not only improved our mathematical modeling skills but also deeply understood the importance of teamwork. I am grateful for the resources and platform provided by the institute. The solid foundation in basic science gave us a great advantage during the competition, and the rich scientific innovation activities allowed us to apply what we had learned. Thanks to the persistence of my teammates and the support of our mentors.
