Engineering Education in France

Engineer education in France is unique and belongs to the elite education system of French universities, which is at the top of the ivory tower of French higher education. According to statistics, about 10% of French high school graduates participate in the pre-engineering stage, of which less than half can obtain the qualification to enter the engineers' school. Among the top 100 companies in France, 60% of the presidents and most of the senior managers come from French engineering schools.

Higher Education System in France

Unlike the higher education systems in China and the United States, the French higher education system is parallelly divided into general universities and "Grandes Ecoles" at the higher education stage, with the Grandes Ecoles representing a distinctive French educational model. The Grandes Ecoles include elite educational institutions such as higher engineering schools, higher medical schools, higher normal schools, and higher business schools. After three years of high school, French students will first face the Baccalaureate exam (BAC). Students who pass the exam will receive their high school diploma and are eligible for direct admission to general universities. Students can apply directly to general universities based on their high school grades, or enter the preparatory education phase for engineering schools. After two years, they will participate in the selective entrance exams organized by various engineering schools (consortiums). Those who pass can enter the engineering education phase. Students who obtain an engineering degree at an engineering school are equivalent to having a master's degree in our country and can choose to continue their studies at the doctoral level.

Relatively speaking, the threshold for entering engineering schools in France is much higher than that of general universities, and the difficulty of admission is very high. Students who wish to study at an engineering school must first participate in at least two years of preparatory basic courses. There are specialized preparatory schools for engineering in France for students to attend. According to statistics, about 10% of French high school graduates participate in the preparatory phase for engineering studies, and less than half of them can obtain the qualification to study at engineering schools.

French-style Engineering Education

The French engineering education system is unique and belongs to the elite education system of the Grandes Ecoles in France, occupying the pinnacle of the French higher education pyramid. In the 18th century, to meet the needs of socio-economic development and scientific and technological progress, and to overcome the shortcomings of traditional national universities where students' theoretical knowledge was detached from practice, some specialized colleges were established to cultivate applied elite talents. During the Napoleonic era, these colleges were reformed and developed, establishing their elite education advantage in higher education. In France, they have become the main channel to the elite class. Relatively speaking, French engineering schools have the following distinct characteristics:

01
High Admission Standards, Small School Size

The number of students enrolled in engineering schools is usually very small. Compared with the thousands or tens of thousands of students in ordinary national universities, the scale of engineering schools is generally around a few hundred people. There are also many of the best engineering schools, such as École des Mines de Paris (MINES), École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC), and École Nationale Supérieure de Techniques Avancées (ENSTA), where each grade has only about a hundred students, and the teacher-student ratio can be as high as 1:2. Selective entrance exams ensure the quality of the student body, coupled with the very small school size, every student in the school can receive ample teaching resources and an excellent educational environment.

In a word, the French engineer education is a very characteristic education system today, which has a history of more than two hundred years since the 18th century industrial revolution in Europe and the society's thirst for scientific and technological productivity as well as complex talents in engineering management. In these two hundred years, as a French and global scientific community, business, military and political talent incubator, the French University of Engineers in the continuous reform and optimization of a set of characteristics of the elite training model. As F. MION, the president of the School of Political Science and Economics in Paris, said, our aim is not to create an "elite club", but to train students through education so that they can reach an elite position.

By honing their skills in the School of Engineers, students are equipped with solid knowledge of the relevant disciplines, the ability to solve practical problems, and the ability to communicate in the language when they enter the society. The fact that a school for engineers with two to three hundred students can consistently produce a number of Nobel Prize and Fields Prize winners, business tycoons, generals and presidents, is a model of education that must have its own shining points that are worth learning from.
